A survey of international association meeting planners conducted by ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) and the IMEX Group found that growth is still being hampered by economic pressures.
The survey of 84 hosted buyers who attended the 10th IMEX show in Frankfurt, Germany, revealed that 28 percent reported higher attendance in 2012, similar to the previous year. Also, 38 percent reported no change compared to 51 percent last year, while 31 percent saw slight reductions in attendance compared to just 15 percent last year.
Further, 14 percent reported higher income from sponsors and exhibitors in 2012, while 34 percent saw no change and 49 percent experienced declines. Only 43 percent reported declining income in 2011. Sixty percent said global financial turbulence was a major reason for declines.
Looking ahead, 22 percent plan to run more meetings in 2013 while 11 percent will have fewer. Forty percent project higher attendance next year while just 10 percent see a decline.
