Energy efficiency is the name of the game at the SeaGate Convention Centre in Toledo, Ohio. SeaGate began generating a good portion of its own electricity in early November when four new on-site electric turbine generators came online. The clean-burning gas turbines will allow the center to generate about 40 percent of its electric needs. SeaGate provides 75,000 square feet of contiguous, column-free exhibit space that can be subdivided into three separate halls. There are 25 meeting rooms, and 620 hotel rooms next door, with 7,000 more in the city.

On Hawaii's Big Island, Hilton Waikoloa Village is in the midst of a $61 million resort enhancement capital project scheduled for completion by the end of 2007. The three-phase project launched in 2005, with renovations to the majority of the resort's 1,240 guest rooms, the 25,000-square-foot Kohala Sports Club & Spa, the 432-seat stadium court at Kohala Tennis Gardens, high-speed wireless Internet access, and more. All ballrooms and meeting facilities have been updated and now have advanced lighting and sound systems.

In 2007, the Kansas City Convention Center will have one of the ten largest convention center ballrooms in the nation. In 2002, Kansas City voters gave the green light to a $150 million expansion, renovation, and technology upgrade of the center. The centerpiece of the project is the 46,450-square-foot grand ballroom, with the capacity to hold 4,650 people theater-style or 3,000 people for meal functions. State-of-the-art lighting using clerestory windows will allow natural light into the space. The grand ballroom's primary 40,500-square-foot space will be able to expand to 46,450 square feet by incorporating the south pre-function space, which offers dramatic views from its 38-foot high, all-glass south wall. For smaller events, the ballroom can be divided into three separate rooms. Construction is scheduled for completion in May 2007. The renovation of the convention center's meeting space was finished in January 2005. The Kansas City Convention Center offers 388,800 square feet of exhibit space, 98,000 square feet of meeting space and 23,900 square feet of ballroom space, which will remain to accommodate smaller events.
