HQ Hotel Update
The financial squeeze on major hotel projects that serve as convention center headquarters hotels isn't limited to Boston and L.A.
Just weeks before the April 29 groundbreaking in Denver for the expansion of the Colorado Convention Center, Mayor Wellington Webb pulled the plug on the deal for a 1,100-room Hyatt headquarters hotel to complement the expansion. The hotel now is expected to open sometime in 2005.
In Palm Beach County, Fla., plans for a 350-room headquarters hotel to be built next to the $80 million Palm Beach County Convention Center have been put on hold. That center is scheduled to open in 2003.
In Irving, Texas, a proposed new convention center may not get the go-ahead from the city until a deal for a headquarters hotel is reached. The convention center could be stalled if an adjoining hotel does not soon fall into place.
