PowerPoint Art, Talking-Heads-Style
David Byrne, former lead singer of the Talking Heads band, has a new creative outlet. Byrne has actually found a way to make PowerPoint presentations — the bane of meeting attendees — cool.
His new book and DVD, entitled Envisioning Emotional Epistemological Information (Steidl & Pace/MacGill Gallery 2003), is a coffee-table volume of bold, graphic images created by Byrne using PowerPoint software. Byrne's ironic twist on the ubiquitous meeting and marketing presentation tool turns staid slides into unique multimedia works of art. If you're wondering why, here's the answer, according to promotional materials. “It is about appropriating a contemporary, corporate staple and making something critical, beautiful, and humorous.”
The book, released in September, contains 96 images on 96 pages and sells for $80. The DVD plays five of Byrne's PowerPoint creations, accompanied by original music.
