Tech Associations Pull the Plug on Their 2010 Event

SuperComm, one of the largest technology trade shows in the early 2000s, has been canceled for 2010. Citing financial concerns, the two associations that jointly sponsor the event—the United States Telecom Association and the Telecommunications Industry Association—have decided to cancel the show, tentatively scheduled for October in Chicago.

No decisions have been made about the event in 2011, said Anne Veigle, spokeswoman for U.S. Telecom.

At its height in 2001, SuperComm attracted 52,000 attendees, but attendance has declined steadily since then. By 2004, it had lost half its audience, with attendance dropping to 26,000. In 2006, U.S. Telecom and TIA decided to part ways and launch separate shows, only to get back together in 2007 to rebrand the event under a new name, NXTcomm. By 2008, attendance at NXTcomm had dropped to about 10,000.

In 2009, the two associations brought back SuperComm, but the show attracted an all-time low 6,400 attendees. This year, the third-party group that manages the show for the associations said attendance rates did not look promising, so the associations canceled.
