Hotel Development Overseas

There’s no sign of a slow-down in the development of hotels overseas. Here is a sampling:

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. announced the introduction of its St. Regis brand to Dubai. Scheduled to open in 2012, The St. Regis Dubai and The Residences at The St. Regis Dubai will feature 220 guest rooms, including 44 junior suites, and 80 residences as well as three world-class restaurants, two bars, a fitness center, swimming pool, shops, and more than 4,500 square feet of meeting space.

The Eurostars Madrid Tower 5, located in Madrid, Spain, is set to open in October. The property will offer 474 guest rooms, each equipped with WiFi Internet access and workstations. The tallest hotel in Madrid occupies one of the buildings in the Cuatro Torres (Four Towers) Business Area, the new business complex situated on Castellana Avenue, which will also be home to the new City of Madrid International Conventions Centre, to be the largest congress facility in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. The hotel will provide 22 meeting rooms, the largest of which seats 1,300 delegates.

The Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila will open in 2012, located within the Fort Bonifacio former military base and city center in The Philippines. With more than 60 stories, including 500 guestrooms and 234 apartments, the building will complement the company’s four existing hotel properties in the Philippines and the Shangri-La Resort and Spa, Boracay, scheduled to open at the end of 2008.

The mixed-use business, residential, and retail tower will be located within the fast-developing Taguig business district. A 30-minute drive from the international airport, the hotel will also be close to the Manila Golf and Polo Club, and 10 minutes from the Makati district, the capital’s financial, cultural, and entertainment hub.

The Hotel Missoni brand debuts in early 2009 in Edinburgh and Kuwait City. A product of the Rezidor Hotel Group, the first two properties have been developed in collaboration with the Italian luxury fashion dynasty Missoni. Hotel Missoni will represent “a new standard of lifestyle hotels that combines the expertise of one of the world's leading hotel operators with the style of Missoni's iconic fashion and home collections,” according to the hotel company.

The Edinburgh and Kuwait properties will become the first city-center and resort hotels within the Hotel Missoni portfolio, which will see 30 hotels open or under development within 10 years. Through the worldwide license agreement with Missoni, Rezidor's strategy is to grow the Hotel Missoni brand globally, initially in Europe and the Middle East, but quickly to expand to North America, South America, and Asia.
