Some Convention Centers Seeing Minimal Impact on Bookings
Chicago’s McCormick Place and the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle are rebounding with hardly a bounce from the September 11 tragedy.
The Motivation Show, scheduled to begin October 9 at McCormick Place, will go on as planned, says the center. More than 20,000 attendees are expected. In October, the Direct Marketing Association’s 84th Annual Conference and Exhibition will bring attendees from 50 countries to Chicago. Also in Chicago in October will be the Worldwide Food Expo, which is expected to bring 35,000 attendees from 150 countries.
Charles Schwab’s Impact 2001 conference, with 3,000 attendees, is expected to go on as planned on October 7 in Seattle. The Aerospace Congress & Exhibition, whose meeting and exhibition at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center were interrupted by news of the attacks on September 11, but was back on schedule the following day. The convention’s 4,000 attendees expressed gratitude to be among colleagues during the crisis.
Even New York’s Javits Center, which saw cancellation of many events in September and October when the facility was designated as the city’s triage headquarters, says that all the cancelled conventions have been rescheduled—all will be held before the end of 2001.
