Union and Starwood Come to Terms in Two Major Convention Cities
One month after Hilton agreed to a contract with Unite Here, Starwood Hotels and Resorts inked contracts with the hotel workers union in Chicago and San Francisco, ending a 20-month stalemate.
In Chicago, the agreement gives new contracts to 1,200 Starwood workers at the Sheraton Chicago, Westin Michigan Avenue, Westin River North, W Lakeshore, W City Center, and the Tremont, as well as approximately 2,000 workers in 16 other hotels, where hotel operators have signed agreements tied to the Sheraton contract.
In San Francisco, the agreement affects workers at the W Hotel, Westin St. Francis, St. Regis, and Palace
In both cities, the two parties agreed to four-year deals, retroactive from August 31, 2009, when the old contract ended. The new contracts include wage increases, improved job stability language, and they preserve healthcare and pension benefits for workers, according to Unite Here officials.
“This settlement is good for Chicago, good for Starwood, and good for our members,” said Henry Tamarin, president, Unite Here Local 1, Chicago. With Hilton coming to terms with Unite Here in March, all contract disputes in the city are settled except those with Hyatt Hotels and the Congress Hotel.
In San Francisco, union officials are still bargaining with Hyatt, Marriott, and InterContinental, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
