Canada's Far East

the Atlantic coast of Canada has Old World charm, spectacular landscapes, exceptional cuisine, and a wide range of attractively priced accommodations and event venues. It's made up of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

This is the land of Evangeline, the setting for Longfellow's tragic love story about two lovers, Evangeline and Gabriel, separated when they were forced to leave their homeland. The Village Historique Acadien, a living museum and historical site in northeastern New Brunswick, recreates life in an 18th-century Arcadian settlement. Available for events, the Village includes period buildings, fields, farmyards stocked with animals, and even its own hotel, the Chateau Albert.

Literature also comes alive on Prince Edward Island, which was the home of author L.M. Montgomery and her character Anne of the Anne of Green Gables series of books. People come to visit Green Gables, located in Prince Edward Island National Park, from around the world.

Atlantic Canada has some of the most magnificent natural wonders in North America. New Brunswick's Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world, with a 45-foot difference between high and low tide.

Cruises are available from May to October to watch the whale migration or to take a trip on “iceberg alley” to get upclose and personal with huge glaciers as they float down the coast from Greenland.

Eastern Canada boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Fortress of Louisbourg in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a reconstructed historic town; Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland has 23 hiking trails; and L'Anse aux Meadows in both Newfoundland and Labrador is a restored Viking settlement.

Opportunities for outdoor activities seem endless in Atlantic Canada, where the ocean water is the warmest north of Maryland. And for golf, Atlantic Canada may be the only place on earth where you can see glaciers drift by as you play. Prince Edward Island, the smallest of the provinces, has more than 25 courses offering affordable play.

Local specialties like lobster, mussels, scallops, and oysters from the ocean, salmon from the rivers, fiddlehead ferns and wild berries from the land combined with local wine and beer create sumptuous feasts. Wineries, located though out Atlantic Canada, offer sommelier-guided tours and tastings.
