How to Dress for Success
Conforming to a meeting's dress code can be tricky, but by following a few fashion “dos” and avoiding some faux pas, fitting in at a business-casual meeting is pretty simple, says Debra Lindquist, image consultant with Lindquist Associates, based in Denver.
The most important factor is the quality of the clothes. Golf shirts, cotton trousers, and dress shirts are fine for business casual for men, as long as they are not ill-fitting or old-looking. Pants should not run over the heel. Sport coats and ties are not required for business causal but should be packed, as they represent “a badge of authority.” For women, suits, trouser outfits, or skirts are all acceptable for business casual, but the ensemble should be coordinated, upbeat, and appropriate for the culture of the organization. Clothes should not send the wrong message, such as too sexy, frumpy, outdated, or downtrodden. “Avoid the too-toos,” she says. Skirt length is variable, depending on the situation. If it's a business meeting, pantyhose is recommended.
Lindquist offers one final fashion nugget. “Dress for where you want to go, not where you are.”
