Conference Centers Go Green
The International Association of Conference Centers in late June commissioned a Green Task Force to educate and inspire member conference centers to conserve natural resources.
Headed by Leslie Vanderzwet of the Banff Centre and T.J. Fimmano of Dolce International, the task force has the following objectives:
To educate IACC members and meeting professionals about opportunities to become more environmentally responsible.
To provide a resource for members and meeting professionals to develop their own green programs.
To recognize properties that are now — or plan to become — leaders of IACC's green initiative.
To help IACC incorporate “green” into its operations and programs.
The goals were established based on a membership survey that showed that 66 percent of respondents felt that demonstrating better environmental practices at their property was important.

An industrywide effort to produce achievable, voluntary standards for greener meetings and events is under way. The Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX), an initiative of the Convention Industry Council, is working with the Environmental Protection Agency and ASTM International Standards to create baseline guidelines that both meeting managers and the hospitality community can embrace.
