MPI White Paper Looks at Meeting Sustainability
Meeting Professionals International has released a white paper addressing the role of our industry in greening meetings. The paper was drawn from the education sessions held in March at MPI's PEC Europe in Copenhagen.
During that conference, futurist Rohit Talwar, CEO of Global Futures and Foresight, said that there is a growing consensus among business leaders about the need for action on sustainability issues and global warming. Travel is one of the world's biggest greenhouse gas producers, and while no similar analysis has been done for meetings-specific travel, “this is a huge industry with a huge impact. We as an industry have a choice,” he said. “We can either comply with regulations just enough to keep our customers happy, or we can move to a position where we're giving our customers something back.”

The Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX), an initiative of the Convention Industry Council, is working with the Environmental Protection Agency and ASTM International Standards to create baseline guidelines that both meeting managers and the hospitality community can embrace.
