Twelve new members joined the Society of Corporate Meeting Professionals (SCMP) in October, announced former SCMP President Rick Hanson, president of HanZon Productions, at the group's annual meeting, held November 5-8 in Atlanta. "We haven't seen this kind of growth since I've been on the board--which is forever."
The organization, which currently has about 150 members, is looking to add 50 in the coming year, says former board member Kevin McNally, catering & convention service manager, Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers.
To that end, SCMP has added a Strategic Planning Retreat to its 1998 calendar. The board of directors will meet in January to develop a working strategy for the future of SCMP. Regular meetings and activities, on a monthly or quarterly basis, help "keep the energy alive that's so important to SCMP," said Hanson.
The three-day meeting brought together about 50 meeting executives and suppliers for discussions on such topics as new audiovisual technology, emergencies at meetings, and international protocol.
Also announced at the meeting: SCMP's new president is Barbara Mason, CMP, vice president, convention services, at the Long Beach (CA) Area CVB.
