Two thirds of the affiliates in the Mr. Meeting Network conducted 1,139 events in 1996--an estimated $31 million in billings--according to John E. Kelly, founder and president of the Jenkintown, PA based organization. (The final third had not reported in by press time.)
Although the network was just officially launched in August, Kelly started recruiting members more than two years ago. The Mr. Meeting Network licenses experienced meeting planners only. Affiliates must have at least 15 years in meeting planning or a CMP designation plus at least ten years of experience. The Mr. Meeting Network covers 175 cities in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Western Europe. Clients pay no fee to the Network itself; its operation and promotion are paid for by the affiliates. Clients can www.mrmeeting.com.for "helping hand" or "take charge" service, Kelly notes. For information, call (800) MR-MEETING or visit the network's Web site at
Meanwhile, the Professional Meeting Planners Network, Inc. (PMPN) recently issued a call for independent meeting professionals to join its ranks. Rod Abraham, PMPN president, says he's seen an increase in inquiries for contract planners to handle everything from multi-city conferences to small, high-level corporate meetings. PMPN currently has 450 independent contractors, who must have at least five years of experience in all facets of meeting planning. Planners interested in joining the network should fax a resume to (972) 513-0540; planners who are interested in contracting with a PMPN planner should call Abraham at (919) 419-8242.
