• Boston's Charles Street Jail, a national historic landmark, will be reborn this summer as THE LIBERTY HOTEL. The $120 million project is nearing its final stages. The 1851 granite jail, with a cruciform-shaped structure and 90-foot central rotunda, has a new cupola, built according to the original design, which was never implemented. The four-star hotel will have 300 guest rooms; 6,000 square feet of flexible meeting space; and a new 16-story wing. Amenities include in-room, flat-panel HD-LCD televisions, Wi-Fi Internet access, VOIP telephones, and 24-hour private dining.

  • THE ISLAND HOTEL in Newport Beach, Calif., is undergoing an extensive renovation slated to be complete in April. The hotel has 295 rooms, including 83 suites. It features and more than 30,000 square feet of meeting and function space, including a 7,000-square-foot ballroom and a 6,600-square-foot ballroom. The hotel also has a spa and two restaurants, and is close to Oak Creek Golf Club.
