Global Meeting Trends

Global tourism soared to a record performance in 2007 and the outlook remains good despite financial crises and high oil prices, according to the U.N. World Tourism Organisation. In its annual report, the UNWTO said the Middle East recorded the largest percentage increase, surging 13 percent to 46 million arrivals in 2007, followed by the Asia-Pacific region, up 10 percent.

And according to research released by the World Travel & Tourism Council and its strategic partner Accenture, world travel will generate close to $8 trillion in 2008, rising to $15 trillion over the next 10 years.

Will your event be part of the total?

Overseas travel challenges remain, in particular a weak dollar that still hovers at record levels against the euro (a whopping $1.59 in mid-April). But international destinations still are uniquely motivating for incentive trips and incomparably energizing for meetings and trade shows. And with guaranteed-rate programs, ever-expanding and improving venue options, and a green movement that shows no sign of slowing, the world is waiting for your site inspection. This guide, the 15th edition of Beyond Borders, was created to help you with tips and advice, and to inspire you with news and ideas. Bon voyage!
