Golf Comes to the Fore

 

  • On Daufuskie Island, S.C., Troon Golf took over management last year of the golf courses at DAUFUSKIE ISLAND RESORT & BREATHE SPA. Across Calibouge Sound from Hilton Head Island, the 190-room resort features the MELROSE COURSE, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course where the last three holes play along the Atlantic shoreline. The BLOODY POINT course, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, is set along the Mungen River Highland with a view of Savannah. www.breathespa.com

  • THE PACIFIC PALMS RESORT, Industry, Calif., plans to break ground on a $17 million refurbishment this month. When finished in 2006, the project will complete a $49 million transformation begun six years ago. The resort will have an additional 90,000 square feet of interior space and 130,000 square feet of updated outdoor space. It will also have a new spa, patio, restaurant, bar, golf pro shop, golf staging area, and improvements to two 18-hole golf courses. The project is a joint effort between the City of Industry, which owns the property, and Majestic Realty Co., which manages the facility. In 2004, the resort completed a $32 million renovation that included more than 45,000 square feet of meeting space, 292 guest rooms and suites, and a new lobby.

  • THE SPA AT SILVERADO RESORT in Napa Valley, Calif., has introduced a golf massage. The 50-minute massage combines techniques including passive stretching, deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, cross-fiber massage, and others. The 16,000-square-foot Spa at Silverado includes 16 private treatment rooms, a full-service beauty salon, fitness studios, a 25-meter lap pool, and outdoor whirlpools. The resort has 280 condominium units and private cottage suites around its two championship golf courses. www.silveradoresort.com.

  • In Boyne Falls, Mich., Boyne USA Resorts' eight courses, all within 28 miles of one another, improved their facilities this year. In addition, the new luxury MOUNTAIN GRAND LODGE AND SPA and state-of-the-art AVALANCHE BAY INDOOR WATERPARK opened at Boyne Mountain in May. At BOYNE MOUNTAIN, upgrades on The Monument and The Alpine course included new bunkers and tee renovations. The main lodge at BOYNE HIGHLANDS RESORT has all new bedding and televisions. Numerous tee renovations have been completed on the Heather and Moor courses, and more golf carts have been added. BAY HARBOR GOLF CLUB — ranked No. 35 among “America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses” by Golf Digest — has added a new fleet of golf carts, equipped with the Pro Link GPS system.   • BARTON CREEK RESORT & SPA, in Austin, Texas, has acquired the Caddie Club. Guests can reserve a caddie or forecaddie seven days a week. Forecaddies are also available for tournaments and group outings. A forecaddie accompanies a group of four players. Barton Creek Resort & Spa features 300 rooms, 72 holes of golf, the Chuck Cook Golf Academy, meeting facilities, and a full-service spa. www.bartoncreek.com

  • RANCHO DE LOS CABALLEROS in Wickenburg, Ariz., provides an ideal backdrop for intimate meetings or group gatherings. The 79-room ranch's 4,500-square-foot Palo Verde Conference Center can accommodate up to 170 people. Trail rides, Jeep tours, hot-air ballooning, and more allow guests to explore the 20,000 acres of Sonoran Desert surrounding the ranch. Groups also can host tournaments at Los Caballeros Golf Club, located on the ranch. The 7,025-yard, par-72 Greg Nash/Jeff Hardin — designed championship course recently received a Silver Medalist award from Golf magazine, an honor given to only 48 resorts nationwide.

  • THE WASHINGTON DUKE INN & GOLF CLUB, on the campus of Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, has completed a two-year, $25 million renovation. The AAA Four Diamond Inn features 271 guest rooms and suites, an executive conference center, a ballroom with seating for up to 600, fitness facilities, golf shop, expanded golf practice areas, and a new varsity golf education building. High-speed and wireless Internet access is standard in guest rooms, suites, conference spaces, and public areas. The 7,000-square-foot conference center has 11 meeting rooms. The Center has preliminary approval from the International Association of Conference Centers. The Duke University Golf Club, the only Robert Trent Jones — designed course in the Triangle, was built in 1957 and redesigned in 1993 by Jones' son, Rees Jones, who redesigned the practice areas for this project. www.washingtondukeinn.com

  • THE SAVOY, A FAIRMONT HOTEL, London, offers members of Fairmont's President's Club complimentary use of TaylorMade golf clubs. Golfers can choose from several courses, including The Wentworth Club, located less than an hour from the hotel. The 18-hole championship West Course has been the stomping grounds for pros such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Mark O'Meara, and others. The hotel is in the heart of the West End theater district. The 263-room property will begin a $50 million, two-phase renovation in January.

  • DORAL TESORO HOTEL & GOLF CLUB, Alliance/Fort Worth, Texas, offers group tournament golfers a NASCAR twist: the golfer who drives closest to the pin on the course's signature 15th hole will win a 10-lap ride at Texas Motor Speedway. Doral Tesoro, 20 minutes from downtown Fort Worth, has 286 guest rooms and 22,000 square feet of meeting space. The 18-hole championship course was designed by Jay Morrish. www.doraltesoro.com

  • In Tisbury, Mass., on Martha's Vineyard, MINK MEADOWS GOLF CLUB debuted a new clubhouse this spring. The course, designed by Wayne Stiles, opened in 1936. www.minkmeadows.com

  • RENAISSANCE ROSS BRIDGE RESORT AND SPA on the ROBERT TRENT JONES GOLF TRAIL opened this summer in the Birmingham, Ala., suburb of Hoover. The resort has 258 guest rooms, 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and function space, and a 12,000-square-foot spa. The 18-hole, 8,100-yard golf course has a club house and pro shop inside the hotel. www.rossbridgeresort.com
