IMEX's Eco Focus
In Europe, IMEX, the worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings, and events, reinforced its leadership position with regard to sustainability with a series of green initiatives at its April show in Frankfurt.
For example, IMEX became the first exhibition in its sector to use completely biodegradable and recyclable badges. Also, the event was the first exhibition at Messe Frankfurt to take advantage of renewable energy. A local hydroelectric power company provided all of the organizers' lighting and electricity requirements for the week. Starting in 2009, IMEX will offer this green energy option to exhibitors.
The IMEX Green Supplier Award, was given to Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, while the Malta Tourism Authority won this year's IMEX Green Exhibitor Award.
IMEX also encouraged certain hosted buyers and visitors from Europe to travel to Frankfurt by train, offering discounts from Deutsche Bahn, while visitors traveling by air were invited to offset their emissions through IMEX's online carbon-offset program.
