San Francisco's 86-room ORCHARD GARDEN HOTEL opens July 12. It is California's first hotel built to the U.S. Green Building Council's standards. Green practices include chemical-free cleaning products, a tobacco-free environment, recycled paper, and soy-based inks. The hotel is San Francisco's first to use a key card system to control room lighting and mechanical systems. When leaving the room, the guest takes the card, “turning off” the room, with the exception of an outlet to charge laptops, cell phones, and other devices. This system, used widely in Europe and Asia, is expected to save nearly 20 percent in energy consumption.
