New and Renovated Facilities

  • THE HYATT REGENCY MONTEREY, Calif., now offers Hyatt Fastboard. Departing guests can print their boarding pass at a terminal in the lobby. Of the hotel's 575 rooms, including 59 suites, 554 are nonsmoking. The hotel offers 40,000 square feet of function space and 32 meeting rooms.

  • LAKEWAY INN, part of the Lakeway Resort and Spa near Austin, Texas, is completing renovations. The resort features 168 remodeled guest rooms, a spa and a 5,200-square-foot ballroom (both set to open in October), and new meeting rooms (for a total of 10).

  • ZERMATT RESORT & SPA opened in June in Midway, Utah. The resort features a Swiss-style village set in the Wasatch Mountains. Hotel der Baer has 226 guest rooms and 23 meeting rooms. The resort has 28,000 square feet of meeting space at the Matterhorn Conference Center, and a 13,000-square-foot exhibition center.

  • WINTERGREEN RESORT, set on 11,000 acres in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, spent $4 million to double WINTERGARDEN SPA AND AQUATICS FITNESS CENTER to 12,000 square feet. The resort is minutes from Monticello and the University of Virginia, 90 minutes from Richmond, and three hours from Washington, D.C.

  • CHATEAU ON THE LAKE RESORT, SPA & CONVENTION CENTER, the largest convention facility in Branson, Mo., opened the $5.3 million SPA CHATEAU. The resort, which has 43,500 square feet of meeting and event space, had already offered spa services, but this is a new, 14,000-square-foot facility with nine treatment rooms that adjoins the 301-room hotel. Chateau on the Lake's 31,744-square-foot great hall can host 4,000 for receptions and can be divided into seven meeting rooms.

  • Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has signed with TriGránit Development Corp. to manage SHANGRI-LA RESORT AND SPA, SEYCHELLES, opening in 2007. The resort will occupy the 23-acre Long Island off the coast of Mahe in Northeast Seychelles. Exclusivity is assured by Shangri-La's boutique hotel size of 55 villas, with a total of 100 suites. A CHI spa will be on the island's central hilltop.

  • San Francisco's 86-room ORCHARD GARDEN HOTEL opens July 12. It is California's first hotel built to the U.S. Green Building Council's standards. Green practices include chemical-free cleaning products, a tobacco-free environment, recycled paper, and soy-based inks. The hotel is San Francisco's first to use a key card system to control room lighting and mechanical systems. When leaving the room, the guest takes the card, “turning off” the room, with the exception of an outlet to charge laptops, cell phones, and other devices. This system, used widely in Europe and Asia, is expected to save nearly 20 percent in energy consumption.
