Spouse Deduction Still Alive
A provision restoring the tax deductibility of travel expenses of spouses who accompany partners on business trips was part of the inheritance tax/minimum wage bill voted down by the Senate last month, but the bill is not dead yet. Senate Republican Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., voted against the measure in a procedural move that allows him to reintroduce it once the Senate reconvenes. The bill passed the House of Representatives at the end of July, but failed to garner the 60 votes needed in the Senate to end debate on the measure.
