Swimming for Vowels
Rainy days are great for board games like Scrabble, but at the Ritz-Carlton Golf and Spa Resort in Rose Hall, Jamaica, the classic word game is best enjoyed on warm, sunny days. That's because, instead of using wooden squares and a game board, the Ritz-Carlton version involves helicopters, the ocean, and swimming.
Helicopter Scrabble is a new take on the old standard for groups meeting at the oceanfront resort. Tennis balls are lettered and thrown into the ocean from a helicopter hovering above Montego Bay. Team members swim out to the floating tennis balls and pass them to teammates on the beach, who spell out words in a “board” on the sand. The words that need to be spelled out relate to the organization, so knowledge of the group and the meeting theme is critical. The team that spells the most words the quickest wins.
