American Airlines offers the bulk of Caribbean service, much of it through its Caribbean hub in San Juan, PR. From San Juan, American Eagle serves many neighboring islands. This year, new routes have been added from San Juan to Tobago and St. Vincent.
Other new flights this year include service on Air Jamaica to the Eastern Caribbean. The carrier has received approval for new service from New York's JFK airport. Air Jamaica will offer a daily flight from New York to Barbados and service via St. Lucia four days a week and Antigua three times weekly. Later in 1997, service from Atlanta will be added.
Visitors should be prepared to pay departure tax when leaving many islands. Ranging from $3 to $20, this fee is usually payable in U.S. currency. Typically the departure tax cannot be paid by credit card.
