"It's very exciting to be us right now," says Nicki Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. What has Grossman so excited is the 500-room convention center hotel opening in the year 2000, the newest development in this former site of the infamous spring breaks. Deciding it preferred the meetings market to the spring break crowd, the city refocused its marketing efforts, and it worked, last year hosting 176 meetings. "The CVB has already sold 215,000 room nights in the hotel through the year 2007," she says. "We're a brand new, totally reinvented city."
