"People don't really know if Sydney can run a convention or event," observes Jon Hutchinson, managing director of the Sydney Convention & Visitors Bureau(SCVB). But winning the Olympics sends a strong message. A city that can handle 500,000 people at once--a crowd that size is expected on busiest Olympic days--obviously can handle meetings and incentives. Between now and the opening of the Games in September 2000, the number of hotel rooms in the city will increase to 30,000. The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre will add 32,280 square feet of exhibition space, eight breakout rooms, and an auditorium.
