Overcoming a Different Kind of Handicap
Beating a handicap has a different meaning for Dennis Walters. Some 28 years ago, Walters was about to realize his dream of playing on the PGA Tour when a golf cart accident left him paralyzed from the waist down.
After months of rehabilitation, he started hitting golf balls again — from a wheelchair. He attached a swivel seat to his golf cart and began hitting trick shots; in 1977, the Dennis Walters Golf Show was born.
Some 2,000 shows later, he continues to wow audiences. He also claims to have the greatest opening act in golf: Benji Hogan, his dog that tees up balls and barks the answers to math problems.
“People get a lot out of my show even if they've never played golf,” he says. “I'm using my own example to encourage others to reach for their dreams.” www.denniswalters.com
