Just Think

What better way to show employees that you care than to give them $50 a month to spend on or someone they love (including themselves)? That's the deal at Inlument Inc., a New York City — based business information provider. The only catch: The money must go toward “a cultural, intellectual, or health-related interest.”

Who doesn't have Last-Minute Meetings? Naturally, the book with that title by Fern Dickey, CMP (2001, Career Press, Franklin Lakes, N.J.) caught our eye. Although there wasn't a whole lot of content specifically derived from seat-of-the-pants planning experiences, the book is nonetheless a good basic primer for the person who just got a meeting thrown at him/her and doesn't know where to start. Especially useful are the many details on budgeting and contracts — everyone's favorite topics — and the hundreds of Web site links.

New Sensation

The first luxury hotel comes to downtown Orlando this month, all dressed in red. The Westin Grand Bohemian will be, in a word, lavish; from the Bosendorfer piano in the grand lobby (one of only two in the world) to the 10-layer “heavenly beds” in the 250 guest rooms. A member of the Grand Theme Hotel portfolio, this property will be themed after a 1920s Austrian hotel, with classic art, classical music, and the colors of Europe everywhere — especially red. The hotel offers 9,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 2,800-square-foot ballroom and six additional meeting rooms.

If everyone could start their day at one place on the Web, it should be the Hunger Site (www.thehungersite.com), which lets users click on a button that sends food to the hungry around the world. To date, more than 101 million visitors have donated 200 million cups of food, which is paid for by the site's sponsors (VISA and Amazon.com among them) and distributed by America's Second Harvest and Mercy Corps. The Hunger Site also serves as the portal for several other sites worth a bookmark, The Rainforest Site (www.therainforestsite.com), the Kids' AIDS Site (www.thekidsaidssite.com), the Child Survival Site (www.thechildsurvivalsite.com), the Breast Cancer Site (www.thebreastcancersite.com), and the Landmine Site (www.thelandminesite.com).
