New Game Plan for Greenbrier Resort
The historic Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.V., is opening a casino. Voters in Greenbrier County, W.V., narrowly passed a referendum last November allowing the resort to operate a guest-only casino, and now Jim Justice, the man who bought The Greenbrier in May, is betting on a gaming future for the 231-year-old property.
The resort announced that the groundbreaking for the new casino will be “in the near future,” with an opening planned for next April. However, in the meantime, a lounge in the resort’s Virginia Wing will be converted for gaming, with slot machines and table games available by September 15.
“We are so excited about the plans for the new casino. It will be a truly spectacular facility, very elegant, and unlike anything anyone has seen before,” said Justice in a statement.
The Greenbrier Resort is having quite a year. The luxury property filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March, and the former owner—Jacksonville, Fla.–based railroad company CSX Corp.—came close to a deal to sell the resort to Marriott International before the coal tycoon stepped in to purchase the resort for a reported $20.1 million.
The 721-room Greenbrier is on the National Register of Historic Places and has hosted past U.S. presidents and royalty. The Greenbrier has three championship golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a 40,000-square-foot spa with 44 treatment rooms, 40 meeting rooms, and a conference center.
