EIBTM 2009: Technology, Sustainability Are Front and Center

Two of the hot topics at EIBTM, the global meetings and incentives exhibition taking place December 1–3 in Barcelona, Spain, are new offerings in meetings technology and corporate social responsibility/sustainability.

Each day of the conference will feature the Daily Technology Hour, with a focus on what's new, useful, practical—and affordable—when it comes to meetings technology. On Tuesday, attendees can check out "Your 2010 Technology Shopping List," presented by tech blogger and former corporate executive Sam Smith. On Wednesday the topic is technology and Gen-Y attendees.

On the sustainability front, EIBTM last year earned BS8901 certification, the British Standard for Sustainable Event Management. The BS8901 standard, explain EIBTM organizers, sets a generic framework that manages the implementation of sustainability for events, venues, or suppliers. The framework creates a way of working that considers economic, environmental, and social impacts.

Last year's efforts promise to pay dividends this year. Organizers report that more than 35 percent of exhibitors were influenced by pre-show communication encouraging them to bring less marketing material last year. And 67 percent said that they would bring less printed material this year.
