TSA to Roll Out Trusted Traveler Pilot Program
The Transportation Security Administration will roll out a “trusted traveler” pilot program this fall in an effort to improve the airline passenger experience and speed up the security process.
The program will run at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, Miami International, and Dallas Fort Worth International airports, giving participating travelers access to expedited screening processes at specific checkpoints within those airports.
Working in partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. airlines, TSA will test enhancements to its pre-flight, identity-based screening capabilities. Initially, the program will be open to U.S. citizens who have registered with CBP’s existing Trusted Traveler programs (such as Global Entry, which expedites security for U.S. passengers entering the U.S.).
“These improvements will enable our officers to focus their efforts on higher risk areas,” said TSA Administrator John Pistole. “Enhancing identity-based screening is another common-sense step in the right direction, as we continue to strengthen overall security and improve the passenger experience whenever possible.”
“We applaud Administrator Pistole’s courage to find a better way to conduct air travel security screening,” said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. “While this program will be limited at the outset, it is a strong start. We look forward to working with TSA to move our nation’s air travel security away from today’s one-size-fits-all approach.” The pilot program is in line with a recommendation that U.S. Travel made to federal authorities back in March to simplify the airport security screening process.
“Recent studies show that travelers are widely supportive of this concept,” said Dow. “As the program evolves, it is critical that eligibility expands beyond frequent-flier programs and that the entirety of the security process—lines and screening—is improved for all travelers.”
TSA’s Pistole is a keynote speaker at the upcoming Global Business Travel Association’s annual meeting in Denver, August 21–24. “We’re looking forward to learning more about this program directly from Administrator Pistole,” said Michael McCormick, executive director and chief operating officer at GBTA. “Our members have the utmost respect for the work TSA does, and we applaud the launch of this pilot program as an important next step in advancing our air transit system,” he said.
