Unions Settle with Vegas Hilton, Set Deadlines for Remaining Hotels
The Culinary Workers Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165, both based in Las Vegas, agreed to a five-year collective bargaining agreement with the Las Vegas Hilton, a major convention property in the city.
The deal with the Las Vegas Hilton and its 1,800 workers is the latest in the string of settlements in the city. Since contracts for roughly 50,000 culinary workers and bartenders expired in June, the union, which is part of Unite Here!, has reached agreements with the major hoteliers, including MGM Mirage and all its properties, Harrah’s, and the Riviera.
However, about 8,000 culinary workers and bartenders at a dozen Las Vegas properties are still working without new contracts. Among the hotels that haven’t settled are The Tropicana and the Golden Nugget.
According to an article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the union has set a deadlines for the remaining properties to reach agreements or else they will terminate the temporary contracts they are working under, which would open the door for possible actions by the union, including strike, boycott, picketing, etc. The deadline for the Golden Nugget, according to the article, is October 17. No deadline has been set for The Tropicana, however. Union officials could not be reached for comment by press time.
