The 463-room Ritz-Carlton, Naples (Fla.) has warmly welcomed a new, permanent guest: Tiburon.

Spanish for "shark," Tiburon is the latest golf-course design by Greg Norman, the PGA's "Great White Shark." The 18-hole course (nine more holes will be added next year) is a five-minute drive from the Ritz, whose guests have priority tee times. Tiburon also will include a clubhouse, to be completed in 2000, and The Ritz-Carlton, Naples Golf Lodge, a 295-room resort directly on the golf course that will be completed by the end of 2001. The Lodge will offer an 8,000-square-foot ballroom.

The Ritz welcomed a group of insurance conference planners to the property in early November, hosted by National Sales Manager Bill Hanley along with Ritz-Carlton Director of Insurance Sales Pam Ferguson, Regional Director of Sales Alexis Romer, and sales reps from other Ritz-Carlton properties.

The biggest news at the Naples resort currently is construction of a 51,000-square-foot spa with a Rose Garden theme. The spa will feature a treatment center, a fitness center, a wellness center, pools, a cafe, and more. Its projected opening is December 2000.

The hotel's total of 40,000 square feet of meeting space includes the 10,000-square-foot Pavilion, the 10,000-square-foot Ritz-Carlton Ballroom, and the 3,600-square-foot Plaza Ballroom.

The Castillo Grand Resort will begin construction soon in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The 270-room resort will feature more than 22,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 12,000-square-foot ballroom.

The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., is enhancing its public space and meeting space this winter and adding a casual outdoor cookout venue called Cheyenne Lodge. The lodge will sit on Cheyenne Mountain and hold 500 guests. The 700-room resort has more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space.

The Fiesta Americana Los Cabos has opened at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. The 278-room oceanfront hotel looks out on the Ocean Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course along the Sea of Cortez. Meeting space holds up to 1,100 attendees.

The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota (Fla.) will open in mid-2001 with 270 rooms. Overlooking Sarasota Bay and the downtown waterfront, the hotel will offer a beach club, a 20,000-square-foot spa, and nearby golf. Plans call for more than 18,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 12,000-square-foot ballroom.

The Hyatt Regency Maui recently broke ground on an oceanfront spa, set to open this summer. The 9,000-square-foot spa, right on Kaanapali Beach, will have an all-glass front and an open-air exercise lanai. The project caps a multiyear renovation program at the 815-room property.

The Caesar Park Cancun Beach & Golf Resort is now the Hilton Cancun Beach & Golf Resort. The 426-room hotel is situated on 250 acres and features an 18-hole golf course, 700 yards of private beach, and more than 30,000 square feet of meeting space.

Sofitel, the upscale brand of the Accor group,will open a new hotel in Paris in late January. The 396-room Sofitel Paris Bercy, in the 12th arrondissement in East Paris, will offer an auditorium seating up to 300 attendees, plus 15 meeting rooms and a separate banquet room that seats up to 500 people.

Construction on the $85 million St. Andrews Bay Golf Resort, Spa & Conference Centre has begun in St. Andrews, Scotland. The 520-acre cliff-top development will include a 209-room hotel, two golf courses, a health spa, and a conference center. It is expected to be completed in April 2001.
