A Swiss Touch in the Wasatch
Dolce International has announced the newest addition to its portfolio of hotel, resort, and conference destinations: Zermatt Resort & Spa in Midway, Utah, in the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains, 45 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport and 15 minutes from Sundance, site of the famed film festival. The first phase will open in November, with the grand opening scheduled for 2006.
Already IACC-accredited, the facility will include the Matterhorn Conference Centre, with 64,000 square feet of flexible meeting space; 13,000 square feet of exhibit space; and an outdoor amphitheater that seats 400 with additional seating for 1,000. The Hotel der Baer will have 226 guest rooms, and the ChateauHotel Villas will have 126 condominiums, available for meeting groups.
The 17,000-square-foot Mountain Rose Spa will feature European-style aromatherapy. Other on-site activities will include indoor and outdoor swimming, a nine-hole golf course, tennis, volleyball, and basketball. A special feature: nine geothermal hot springs, which can be used even in winter.
The 30-acre, $120 million resort is being shepherded by Robert L. Fuller, DDS, a dentist and real estate developer whose ancestors were part of a major Swiss migration to the area in the mid-19th century. That heritage is honored in the names and in the design of the facilities. The architecture is Alpine — a mix of Swiss, German, and Austrian — and all the wood-carved elements in the four-story, chalet-style hotel are being done in Germany. Continuing the theme, staff will be costumed: women in dirndl skirts, men in short-sleeved black velvet jackets embroidered with edelweiss. “We did a lot of market research,” says Andrew (Andy) J. Dolce, founder, chairman, and CEO of Dolce International, “and we found that people are looking for something different. This will be an important incentive destination.”
