Grand Bahama Island's The Lucayan Although it has already welcomed several meeting groups to the first phase of the massive hotel, The Lucayan (800-LUCAYAN, www.thelucayan.com) promises that the best is yet to come. "The resort will be quite spectacular," explains Gary Pugatch, vice president of sales and . "It offers groups the next great destination resort in the Caribbean. The Lucayan will have a wide variety of options to make meetings unique and special. We will take our place in the great resorts in the Caribbean in league with Puerto Rico's El Conquistador and our neighbor Atlantis."
The 1,350-room resort will include 40,000 square feet of meeting space, scheduled to open December 1. The $350 million property will also include water sports, a spa, a children's center, and, in 2001, a casino. Active attendees find two golf courses (one designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.), a golf academy, and tennis, as well as shopping at the adjacent Port Lucayan Market.
One of the attractive features of the resort is its convenience for U.S. groups. "We are only 52 miles from the East Coast and air service will continue to grow as the destination grows," notes Pugatch. "We are perfect for a quick three-day meeting or incentive trip."
