Message from the President

Dear Fellow Members and Hospitality Partners: Rather than write the typical stirring message (ha!), I am going to devote this space to all the ICPA activities that will be happening over the next couple of months. Some will have happened by the time you read this but are important to mention nonetheless, and other information will be very timely. In any event, I hope you find it useful.

  • The Lottery for Hospitality Partners to attend the Annual Meeting was held on May 4. Hospitality Partners may also earn a spot at the Annual Meeting by recruiting meeting professionals to become ICPA members. Here is how it works:

    1. Recruit one new member who registers for and attends the Annual Meeting, or
    2. Recruit three new members (who don't register for or attend the Annual Meeting).
  • Members are reminded of our Past President's challenge to increase membership to 500. Have you met someone who would like to join ICPA?

  • The Annual Meeting will be held at Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas, November 11 to 15. Brett Barrowman and the Design Team members have developed a tremendous program. Don't miss this opportunity for education and networking. Flights to the Bahamas fill up quickly and airfares skyrocket so we urge attendees to make their air arrangements soon. Hospitality Partners who are hosting pre- or post-meeting site visits to their respective properties should send invitations soon, as we are urging attendees to make flight plans now.

  • Refer to dates and locations of your local ICPA chapter meetings elsewhere in this edition. The NE Chapter meeting was held April 10 to 11, and it was outstanding. Thanks to Pat Jaworkski and Karyn Rizzo for organizing a great event!

FORUM Plans Announced

Great Turnout, Support for NE Revival

The first “revival” meeting of the Northeast ICPA chapter was held April 10 at the Saybrook Point Inn in Old Saybrook, Conn. The event was sponsored by several of ICPA's key hospitality partners and focused on “Hot Hotel Issues for 2001.” Twenty-two planners attended.

Discussion topics included questions from both sides of the floor ranging from tougher attrition clauses, higher meeting room rental charges, stricter food and beverage guarantees to the effect of the economy on our business. Hospitality partners wanted to know if they were meeting planners' needs. They advised planners to provide as much detail as possible in the initial RFP process and to take advantage of national sales contacts. Another sponsor, John Englert of Amtrak, updated the group on its new Acela high-speed service in the Northeast.

Toronto Gathering

Hot Time in a Hot City

This year the ICPA Canadian Regional Chapter meeting will be held August 24 to 26 at the Hilton Toronto, newly renovated in 2000. The hotel is set amid the hottest dining, shopping, and entertainment in the city that is Canada's business center. The meeting will commence with lunch and roundtable discussions on Friday afternoon, August 24, and will wrap up Sunday, August 26, at noon. ICPA FORUM: Beyond Déjà-Vu

Le Chateau Frontenac to Welcome Planners to Québec City

The FORUM's two-day program in Québec City, put together by Vice President of Education Mauna Hatchett, CMP, includes workshops with hands-on learning opportunities, leaving you with take-home skills and ideas.

Among this year's topics: small meetings, risk management and compliance issues; technology (both at meetings and in meeting planning); and creativity in theming, food, wine, writing styles/promotion, and events, to name just a few.
