Last October, the first phase of the Levera Beach Golf Course in St. George's, Grenada, broke ground. The course and clubhouse complex will be Grenada's first 18-hole golf course when they open in January 2003. Two 300-room branded hotels and other facilities on Levera Beach will also open soon.
The former Resort & Casino at Bahamia, now the 965-room Royal Oasis Golf Resort and Casino, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas, recently completed a $42 million renovation, which included a $6 million redesign of the resort's USGA-rated championship golf facilities, The Ruby and The Emerald. The Ruby course was completely redesigned by the Fazio Design Group.
The 700-room Radisson Cable Beach Resort, Nassau, The Bahamas, recently unveiled a complete redesign of its golf course's front nine holes. The redesign is the first step in bringing Nassau's first public golf course up to a resort-quality championship level. In November, the redesigned back nine holes will reopen, along with a driving range lighted for night play and the renovated clubhouse.
The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, Greensboro, Ga., opened this April, offering 81 holes of championship golf, a Dave Pelz Golf Scoring Game School (the first in the country to focus on both long and short game instruction), and specialized golf programs.
Hilton Tobago, Lowlands, Tobago, recently opened the new Plantations Golf and Country Club, with the 7,000-yard, par-72 PGA championship Plantations Course. Set on the windward side of the island on the southwestern coast, the course's 18 holes feature palm trees, mangroves, and a sugar mill. The Plantations Course is Tobago's only PGA championship — designed golf course. The course will serve as the host venue for the 2002 European Seniors Tour and offers artificial lakes and newly created wetlands. Plantations also offers a golf academy staffed with British PGA-qualified golf pros.
The Belleview Biltmore golf course in Clearwater, Fla., reopened for play in early March, was returned to its original, classic design by a $2 million renovation. The original 18-hole course was completed in 1925 by Scottish-born golf course architect, Donald Ross. The new Belleview Biltmore course is USGA rated and now has a challenging par-71 rating. The Belleview Biltmore Golf Club has 3 PGA professional teaching pros on site and also offers the Ken Venturi Golf Academy.
