At the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, Phoenix, a $25 million renovation and addition to its conference and meeting space is planned. Once complete, the 730-room-and-suite Biltmore will have more than 100,000 square feet of indoor meeting space, including the new 25,000-square-foot Frank Lloyd Wright Ballroom, expected to open in June 2003. The ballroom addition will have more than 11,500 square feet of prefunction space and an option of 10 breakout rooms. Great Wolf Lodge, Kansas City, Kan., projects a summer 2003 opening. The Bellagio, Las Vegas, will begin construction on a $375 million expansion in mid-2003. The addition will include a 925-room spa tower, an expansion of the Bellagio spa and salon, 60,000 square feet of new meeting space, 5,000 square feet of additional retail space, and a new restaurant. W hotels will open its 17th hotel in San Diego in December. In the heart of the new residential loft district, W San Diego will have 261 rooms, including 32 suites on 16 floors. In September, management company Fairmont Hotels & Resorts took over the management of the Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, Hot Springs, Calif. The inn was renamed The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. The 75 year-old, 228-room resort recently expanded its spa to 40,000 square feet and enlarged its meeting facilities. The Disneyland Hotel, Anaheim, Calif., recently finished a $50 million renovation that includes a complete redo of all 990 guest rooms. Disneyland images and icons, such as Mickey Mouse, Tinker Bell, and scenes from Fantasia, were incorporated into the new decor. The first phase of the renovation, completed in 2001, included a new pool based on the animated film Peter Pan and incorporates a miniature Jungle Cruise and a pirate ship that houses a 110-foot water slide. Slated for a 2005 opening, the Bayfront Convention Center, Erie, Pa., will be a $64 million facility built on 3.6 acres on Erie's waterfront. Expected to bring in more than $15 million in new revenue to the region, the 113,500-square-foot convention center will have an enclosed walkway connecting the center to the new Marriott hotel and restaurant complex. Flexible ballroom, banquet, and meeting room space will accommodate groups of 100 to 1,000. The center will include a 29,000-square-foot exhibit hall, 13,000-square-foot ballroom and banquet facility, 12 meeting rooms, and more than 19,000 square feet of pre-function space. www.erieevents.com

The 471-room St. Kitts Marriott Royal Beach Resort & Spa, St. Kitts, West Indies, will open during the first quarter 2003. The resort will have 12,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a 7,100-square-foot ballroom that is divisible into three sections; additional meeting rooms with 5,000 square feet of space; and a boardroom and terraces for events. Also on site: a 15,000-square-foot health club and spa, three swimming pools, tennis courts, retail shopping, a 35,000-square-foot casino, and a championship 18-hole golf course.

The 300-room, all-inclusive Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., recently opened its $1.5 million Journeys Spa. To commemorate the new facility, the resort has changed its name to Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa. The largest full-service spa in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the two-level, 10,000-square-foot facility has full massage and body services, a complete fitness center, and a full-service styling salon. The Hilton Sydney, Hilton International's Australian flagship hotel, will close on November 29 for a $400 million renovation. It will reopen in early 2004, and will have 577 guest rooms, a convention center, commercial office space, and a 21,500-square-foot health club. The 18-month project, a basement-to-rooftop remodeling, includes a new world-class convention and conference center that will accommodate up to 3,000 attendees, with 23 meeting rooms and a ballroom that will seat 1,200 people. www.hilton.com

Located on Mexico's Pacific Coast, the 250-room Meliá Azul Ixtapa Beach Resort & Conference Center, Ixtapa, Mexico, recently began a $19 million expansion that will add 148 more rooms and a dedicated convention center. Headed for an early 2003 completion, the property will then have 398 guest rooms and a new convention center featuring a 5,500-square-foot foyer and 19,254-square-foot main meeting room, as well as 12 breakout rooms and an executive board room.
