FICP Profile: James Zankel, CMP, CMM, NCCI
What do you see as the benefits of FICP membership?
I have been a member of FICP since 2008. I saw the relationships my colleagues established with other planners and hospitality providers, and how important those relationships are to our business. There are so many benefits gained by being an active member of FICP. The organization offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional development through education, interacting with industry leaders, and attending FICP conferences. FICP continues to enhance my ability to be an effective planner.
What is the value of attending FICP regional meetings?
I find the educational and networking aspects of the regional meeting the two most valuable. The topics are always timely and relevant to the industry. The information gained can be immediately put into practice. The networking between planners and hospitality partners is also beneficial, and the connections made at the regional meetings become lasting contacts and friends.
Why did you volunteer your time as Region Chair?
FICP is a great organization, and I saw the opportunity to become more intimately involved. I knew this commitment would benefit my personal and professional growth and development, and allow me the chance to give back.
What is your outlook on meetings in 2011?
Our 2011 meeting outlook is strong. As we emerge from the previous challenges in our industry, our processes have become even more strategic. We have looked at every aspect of our meetings and programs, including how we can meet expectations or improve on how we’re delivering services to our members, customers, and stakeholders. By looking at the entire picture creatively—meeting room use, menu management, travel, shipping—we can target areas for improvement. Our main goal is to keep our processes transparent to customers.
What is one great piece of advice you’ve received in your career?
Don’t be afraid to ask the next question: Who? What? Where? Why? When? And one big takeaway from the 2010 FICP Annual Conference: Ask yourself, “What if and why not?”
