Golf Venues to the Fore
The 318-ROOM NAPLES BEACH HOTEL & GOLF CLUB, with 34,000 square feet of meeting and event space, is Naples' only beachfront resort offering on-site championship golf, a spa, and a tennis center. The resort completed a $6 million enhancement of its lobby in 2005, which was the final part of a five-year, $40 million project. The resort occupies 125 acres with 1,000 feet of white sand beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Amenities include an 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course; a spa and fitness center; a beachfront swimming pool; and a tennis center with six Har-Tru courts.
OCEAN EDGE RESORT & CLUB ON CAPE COD, near Brewster, Mass., is enhancing its 429 acres. Among the highlights of the second phase of the multiyear, multimillion-dollar renovation is a redesign of the resort's 18-hole PGA Championship golf course by the Nicklaus Design Group. The front nine is scheduled to open spring 2007, with the entire course completed by spring 2008. The first phase of the project, completed in 2005, included renovations to guest rooms, meeting spaces, the golf course, and public spaces. Ocean Edge has 335 guest rooms, 700 feet of private beach, six pools, two tennis facilities, 13 meeting rooms totaling 15,000 square feet, Wi-Fi access throughout the resort, four restaurants, and more. The resort's mansion is also adding a 5,000-square-foot ballroom.
Wisconsin-based KALAHARI RESORTS added TRAPPERS TURN GOLF CLUB to its amenities at Wisconsin Dells. Designed by Andy North and Roger Packard, the 27-hole, 540-acre Trappers Turn is a five-mile, seven-minute shuttle ride from Kalahari. Kalahari, home to the largest indoor water park in the United States, offers the state's largest hotel with 740 guest rooms and suites, a 100,000-square-foot convention center, a full-service spa and salon, and a fitness center.
Benchmark Hospitality International completed more than $1 million in upgrades to the EAGLEWOOD GOLF COURSE, a classic 1928 Charles Maddox — design golf course 35 miles west of Chicago at the EAGLEWOOD RESORT & SPA in Itasca, Ill. Seventy-five bunkers have been redesigned or installed, and the resort has installed a new dual-row irrigation system. Just off the 18th green, golfers can unwind on a new 60-seat patio and enjoy full food and beverage service from the adjacent restaurant. The resort has 295 guest rooms and suites as well as 38,000 square feet of IACC-certified meeting space and a spa.
GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT AND CASINOS, Traverse City, Mich., boasts 85,000 square feet of meeting space just a 10-minute shuttle ride from Traverse City's airport. The resort has three championship courses along Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. The most challenging is The Bear, designed by Jack Nicklaus. The Wolverine, a Gary Player — designed course, offers accommodations for golfers of all abilities. Spruce Run, the third course, allows golfers to play while enjoying the wildlife of Michigan's Northwoods. The resort has a pro shop, a club house, and a golf school taught by Jim McLean.
Jack Nicklaus Design will create two courses at the new CABO PACIFICA resort at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Cabo Pacifica is a 1,850-acre master-planned resort community with more than three miles of beachfront adjacent to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The community will include a hotel, spa, and residences, with construction beginning in January and expected to be completed in late 2008. Already established in the area are two luxury resorts, Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort and Spa and Pueblo Bonito Pacífica Holistic Retreat and Spa.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.'s global brand, Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts, continues to expand in the Asia Pacific region with the signing of LE MéRIDIEN SUVARNABHUMI GOLF RESORT & SPA, Thailand. Starwood will manage this new resort in Samut Prakan, southeast of Bangkok and approximately 3 miles from the new Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand. The 214-room resort, opening in July 2008, will be part of a 160-acre mixed-used enclave, including Summit Windmill Golf Club, an 18-hole Nick Faldo — designed course — all a 40-minute drive from Bangkok.
Situated on 650 tropical acres, DORAL GOLF RESORT & SPA, a Marriott Resort, Miami, Fla., is known for its five championship golf courses, including the famed Blue Monster. Doral also offers the Great White, a Greg Norman design that is the only golf course in the Southeastern United States using coquina (crushed shells) on every hole. Doral features more than 110,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space; as part of the hotel's multimillion-dollar renovation, the $25 million, 60,000-square-foot Legends Ballroom will debut in early 2007. Doral is seven miles from Miami International Airport.
MARCO ISLAND MARRIOTT RESORT, GOLF CLUB & SPA on the southwestern-most tip of Florida's Gulf Coast, is a luxury resort set on three miles of beach. The Rookery at Marco, an 18-hole, Audubon-endorsed championship golf course, was recently redesigned by Robert Cupp Jr. The facility features the 14-acre Faldo Golf School by Marriott practice facility. The resort also includes an adult tennis clinic, a full-service business center, two pools, water sports, and a fitness center. With 60,000 square feet of meeting space, the resort can host up to 2,000 guests.
FRENCH LICK RESORT CASINO, French Lick, Ind., has opened. The opening of the casino is a major milestone in the $382 million resort restoration and casino development. The property includes the French Lick Springs Hotel (circa 1901), which is now open with 443 guest rooms and suites, as well as the West Baden Springs Hotel (circa 1902), which is being restored and is expected to reopen in May. The 1917 Donald Ross Golf Course at French Lick Resort Casino reopened in September. The Pete Dye Course at French Lick is slated to open in spring 2008, and the nine-hole Tom Bendelow Course will open in spring 2007. Upon completion, the resort and casino will feature 684 guest rooms and suites; an 84,000-square-foot casino; 45 holes of golf; and two full-service spas. French Lick Resort Casino is operated by Benchmark Hospitality International.
The historic Donald Ross Course at BEDFORD SPRINGS RESORT in Bedford, Pa., is being restored and is expected to reopen in spring 2007. The restoration is part of a $100 million-plus renovation and expansion of the resort, sections of which date to 1804, to create a 210-guest room, four-star resort and conference facility. The property is expected to reopen in summer 2007 with more than 19,000 square feet of meeting and event space and a 30,000-square-foot spa complex.
AMELIA ISLAND PLANTATION, Amelia Island, Fla., has added Royal Amelia Golf Club. The resort now offers 72 championship holes. Royal Amelia, a par-72 track designed by Tom Jackson, offers 18 holes. Just 29 miles north of Jacksonville International Airport, the resort has 249 guest rooms, a spa, tennis courts, and more.
The 301-room RENAISSANCE RESORT AT WORLD GOLF VILLAGE in St. Augustine, Fla., adjacent to the World Golf Hall of Fame and adjoining the St. Johns County Convention Center, is the largest combination hotel and conference center between Atlanta and Orlando, with 86,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Golfers can play on two championship courses, including the King & Bear, the only course co-designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.
SAWGRASS MARRIOTT RESORT & SPA, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., with 508 guest rooms and suites, offers guests the Tournament Players Club Sawgrass. The Dye's Valley Course and Stadium Course, two of the five championship courses, were recently renovated. The TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course reopened in November, with renovations overseen by Pete Dye. The new 80,000-square-foot clubhouse is slated for an early 2007 completion. The resort offers 56,000 square feet of meeting space.
ROCKY GAP LODGE & GOLF RESORT, Cumberland, Md., is nestled in the 3,200-acre Rocky Gap State Park in western Maryland, two hours from Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. The resort is home to Maryland's only Jack Nicklaus Signature design golf course, a par-72, 18-hole championship course. The resort features a private beach, hiking trails, a nearby aviary, fishing, and kayaking as well as sporting clays, tennis courts, a fitness room, pools, and a spa. Facilities include more than 15,000 square feet of meeting space and team-building programs.
