Putting the Ah in Spa

  • Sited on an entire city block of the Mission Inn District of Riverside, Calif., the MISSION INN, which opened in 1903 and is on the National Register of Historic Places, debuted the full-service Kelly's Spa last spring. The 6,000-square-foot spa has six treatment areas. The Mission Inn has 19,000 square feet of indoor meeting and event space and 5,000 square feet of outdoor courtyard space.

  • In San Diego, LOEWS CORONADO BAY RESORT has a new 10,000-square-foot spa, salon, and fitness center. SEA SPA has 15 treatment areas, including four outdoor massage areas, a couple's suite, and a Vichy room, as well as a steam room, sauna, and Jacuzzi. An aerobic studio with spring-loaded floors features group and private classes.

  • HOTEL PARK CITY, with 54 suites right on the Park City (Utah) golf course, opened a 10,000-square-foot, full-service spa last spring. THE SPA AT HOTEL PARK CITY focuses on natural healing remedies and wellness education. In addition to seven treatment rooms, the spa has separate meditation rooms for men and women; a movement studio for powerball, yoga, and Pilates classes; a cardiovascular and strength-training center; and a relaxation lounge.

  • HYATT REGENCY SCOTTSDALE RESORT & SPA AT GAINEY RANCH will debut a 21,000-square-foot,$9 million spa in May in Scottsdale, Ariz. It will have 18 treatment rooms, five outdoor treatment gardens, a mineral pool, exercise facility, salon, and sauna.

  • THE SPA AT CAMELBACK INN, A JW MARRIOTT RESORT & SPA, has completed an $8 million renovation. There is a new fitness center, 32 treatment rooms, a spa pool, and a spa restaurant, Sprouts.

  • Opened in February in Boulder, Colo., the ST. JULIEN HOTEL & SPA has 200 rooms and suites and a 10,000-square-foot spa and fitness center. The spa offers 12 treatments rooms; sauna and steam rooms; and a two-lane lap pool with whirlpool and outdoor terrace. The hotel is 46 miles from Denver International Airport.

  • ELDORADO HOTEL & SPA, in Santa Fe, N.M., opened NIDAH SPA in December. The 4,300-square-foot “healing spa” has seven treatment rooms and uses native herbs and plants for its treatments.

  • Five miles from the village of Stowe, Vt., TOPNOTCH RESORT AND SPA finished a multimillion-dollar makeover of its spa in December, enlarging it to 35,000 square feet and adding 14 new treatment rooms for a total of 30. Lounge and locker areas have doubled in size; private spa lounges feature a fireplace. A sky-lighted solarium with whirlpool and cascading waterfall has a large heated pool and 360-degree views of the Green Mountains. An aerobics studio, a fully equipped weight-training studio, and a full-service salon round out the offerings.

  • In New York City, the 187-room HOTEL GANSEVOORT opened last spring with a 5,100-square-foot, full-service spa as well as a complete exercise facility.

  • Looking to bring your group just a little closer while in New York? EXHALE SPAS has two 10,000-square-foot facilities in town, on the Upper East Side and in midtown. Exhale does customized classes and workshops, including “team fusion” classes, combining Pilates, partner yoga, core conditioning, and stretching.

  • THE MANDARIN ORIENTAL, WASHINGTON, D.C., opened a 14,000-square-foot spa last year with a fitness center and eight treatment rooms. Also on-site: a 50-yard heated indoor lap pool and a sundeck overlooking the Potomac River.

  • THE RENAISSANCE RESORT AT WORLD GOLF VILLAGE in St. Augustine, Fla., opened the PGA TOUR SPA LATERRA in December. In addition to traditional spa and salon services, the spa features “golf-enhancement” services and fitness programs. A short ride from the resort, the spa overlooks the fairways of the King & Bear golf course. Its 11 treatment rooms include the Garden Sanctuary, two facial rooms, two body treatment rooms, four massage rooms, and a hydrotherapy room. There are also outdoor treatment areas and an infinity-edge pool.

  • THE HYATT REGENCY MAUI RESORT & SPA recently expanded its oceanfront Spa Moana to 10,000 square feet and added a 5,000-square-foot athletic club.

  • After sustaining minimal damage when Hurricane Ivan swept through Grand Cayman last September, WESTIN CASUARINA RESORT & SPA, on Seven Mile Beach, has reopened all its 340 guest rooms and public spaces. The resort's HIBISCUS SPA, with 15 treatment rooms, is up and running.

  • PRESIDENTE INTERCONTINENTAL COZUMEL RESORT & SPA, in Cozumel, Mexico, has opened the 6,500-square-foot, full-service SERENITY SPA. The spa incorporates traditional Mayan relaxation techniques into its offerings.

  • On Mexico's Riviera Maya, a new beachside event palapa has opened at CEIBA DEL MAR SPA RESORT. The resort, 20 minutes south of Cancun International Airport, has 126 accommodations. The new 660-square-foot palapa can accommodate 60 people for a dinner, and up to 200 for dinner and cocktails in the surrounding patio and beach areas.
