Lanai has changed from the Pineapple Island of the Dole family to a secluded isle best known for its superb golf and outstanding two resorts: the Lodge at Koele and the Manele Bay Hotel. Accessible by boat from Maui, Lanai is part of Maui County.
Developed by the Dole company, the Lodge opened in 1990, reminiscent of a stately English manor. In 1996, Conde Nast Traveler named it "Best Golf Resort." At the Manele Bay Hotel, on a cliff overlooking Hulopoe Bay, the path to the beach leads through an ancient Hawaiian village site.
The island has but one town, Lanai City, with no high-rise buildings, tour buses, shopping centers, or even stop lights. So what is there to do besides golf? Relax and enjoy The Spa at Manele. Snorkel in the pristine waters of Hulopoe Bay. Go big-game fishing or ocean rafting, explore petroglyph sites, or bike to mysterious-looking rock formations.
