Movers, shakers, and overachievers

Norman B. Kahn, MD, has been promoted to vice president, education and science, at the American Academy of Family Physicians, Leawood, Kan. He had been director, division of education. Kahn will oversee the activities of two new education divisions and the scientific activities division. The former education division will be split into the division of medical education and the division of continuing medical education. Kahn has been with the Academy since 1991.

HEALTH CARE John H. Graham IV has been appointed chairman of the board of directors at the Foundation of the American Society of Association Executives. Graham is the CEO at the American Diabetes Association, Alexandria, Va. He will fill a two-year term vacated by Ronald S. Moen, executive director, American Association of Orthodontists.

Donald Nelinson, PhD, has joined Physicians World in Secaucus, N.J., as vice president for continuing medical education. Formerly, he had served with Impact Communications, Inc., in New York City as director, CME services.

CONVENTION CENTERS & BUREAUS At the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, Hazel Beltran has been promoted to national sales manager for non-Moscone Convention Center accounts, and Teresa Wong-Jones is the new sales manager for small meetings. Beltran, who was promoted from convention registrar coordinator, will be responsible for scientific association bookings. Wong-Jones was previously in sales at the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. At the bureau, she will handle meetings occupying fewer than 50 rooms.

Jonathan Campbell joins the Los Angeles office of the Australian Tourist Commission as manager, meetings, incentives, conventions; and exhibitions marketing director in North America. Campbell has worked for the ATC in London since 1993 as manager for market development Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East.

HOTELS AND TRAVEL Tom Hemer has been named director of hotel sales at the Pittsburgh City Center Hotel. Hemer most recently was director of sales and marketing at the Ontario (Calif.) Airport Marriott.

Kristen Boehning has been appointed director of executive group sales at Saddlebrook Resort, Tampa (Fla.). She will be responsible for small group sales at the resort. Boehning comes to the resort from the Registry Resort in Naples, Fla., where she was director of revenue and yield management.

Hilton in the Walt Disney World Resort has announced that Michael Kovensky will be its director of marketing. He was previously director of sales for this Downtown Disney area resort hotel. The hotel also announced the promotion of Jared McLachlan to director of sales from assistant director of sales.

Cindy Highberg has been appointed director of sales for the new Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, scheduled for a spring 2001 opening. Highberg has spent the previous four years as director of sales for the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis.

At the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Golf and Tennis Resort, John David Madison has been appointed sales manager in charge of the pharmaceutical market, as well as the Northeast regional sales manager. Madison was previously national corporate sales manager for the Mills House Hotel in Charleston, S.C.

At the Westin Galleria in Houston, Stacey Moritz has been appointed director of group sales. Moritz was previously sales manager for the Westin Galleria.

At the Hotel Sofitel Los Angeles, Elizabeth Grillos was named director of sales and marketing. She previously held the same title at the New Otani Hotel & Garden in Los Angeles.

Billie Lewis will serve as sales manager at the new Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio (Texas). Lewis comes to the hotel from The Omni, San Antonio.

Brian Soma has assumed the director of sales role for the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. He comes from The Orchid at Mauna Lani, where he was account director.

MEETING SERVICES Marta Hayden, long-time director of sales for the Monterey Conference Center, has joined Bostrom Corp. as a vice president, based in Monterey, Calif. She will focus on the outsourcing of meetings and exhibitions, as well as full-service association management for the association and event management firm.

Judy Owen has been promoted to vice president, exhibitor sales and services, at AVW Audio Visual, a Freeman Company. She was formerly the corporate director of exhibitor sales and services at AVW, which is based in Dallas and provides audiovisual support to the meeting, convention, and exposition industry.
