What a Policy Should Include

According to Vicki Donati, Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg, the basic elements of a harassment policy include:

  • A definition of conduct that constitutes harassment

  • An indication that the policy applies to all employees at all levels

  • An outline of the complaint procedure

  • Assurance that a prompt investigation will occur

  • A disciplinary action section outlining steps that will be taken

  • Assurance that the complaint will be treated as confidentially as possible (not guaranteeing confidentiality, but making an effort)

  • Assurance that retaliation will not be tolerated and will be subject to disciplinary action as appropriate.

It's also considered best practice to republish your policy once a year.
