Colorado Convention Center Earns LEED Green Building Certification

The Colorado Convention Center has garnered certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) from the U.S. Green Building Council. To achieve LEED certification, the Colorado Convention Center significantly reduced its energy usage and improved in the areas of sustainable purchasing, green cleaning, occupant comfort, air quality, and waste diversion. For the city of Denver, implementation of the USGBC standards has saved millions in operating costs and reduced carbon emissions by over 26 percent.

LEED is an independent, nonprofit, third-party rating system seeking to recognize buildings with a comprehensive approach to sustainability. Certification for existing buildings is gained by satisfying strict efficiency requirements in the areas of building operations and maintenance.

The 2.2 million-square-foot Colorado Convention Center offers a 584,000-square-foot exhibit level that can be divided into six individual halls. Its 63 meeting rooms total 100,000 square feet, and an additional 85,000 square feet of ballroom space is available. The 5,000-seat Wells Fargo Theatre can be used as a lecture hall, a general session area for conventions and trade shows, or a concert hall for national headline entertainers. More than 100 professional meeting planners worked with the architects to design the building, which is located in the heart of downtown Denver.
