Medem and American Medical Association Kick Off 2001 Internet Health Road Show

Medem, a physician-patient web-based network founded by the nation's leading medical societies, will collaborate with the American Medical Association (AMA) and Intel on the 2001 ``Internet Health Road Show.''

``We have already partnered with the AMA to bring physicians an online service that offers clinical information from the AMA and leading medical societies,'' said Nancy W. Dickey, MD, Editor-in-Chief of Medem (and former AMA president). ``The Road Show is a natural extension of our partnership -- we wanted to offer a program that helps physicians learn how to apply useful Internet healthcare technologies to benefit and streamline their practices.''

The AMA Medical Communications and Health Reporting Conference is the third venue for this year's ``Internet Health Road Show,'' and an estimated 200 practicing physicians are expected to participate.

``While huge numbers of patients are accessing the Internet for healthcare information, physicians have been slower to adopt the technology into their practices,'' said Edward Fotsch, MD, CEO of Medem. ``But the Internet has enormous potential to help a physician's practice increase revenues, enhance communications and ultimately improve the quality of the healthcare delivery, for both physicians and patients.''

The ``Internet Health Road Show'' was introduced in 1999 to increase physicians knowledge about the latest Internet technologies, identify and apply the most appropriate Internet solution to their practices, and explore the online services that make a difference in physician-patient relations and patient care.

The program, which will be held at numerous sites across the country in 2001, takes place in a classroom setting and includes hands-on workshops as well as keynote presentations by physicians who are experts in the field. The ``Internet Health Road Show'' is supported by Medem through an unrestricted educational grant. For registration information, visit the AMA website.

About Medem
Established in October 1999 by the nation's medical societies, Medem's network consists of organizations whose membership includes more than two-thirds of American physicians. Medem is building a secure patient-physician network featuring the clinical content of medical societies and direct patient access to their own physician's Web site, with tools and services that adhere to the standards for physician-patient interaction on the Internet recommended by the nation's top medical malpractice liability carriers.

Medem was founded by the American Academy of Ophthalmology; the American Academy of Pediatrics; the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology; the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists; the American Medical Association; the American Psychiatric Association; and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Among the newest societies to join the Medem network are the American Academy of Physician Assistants; the American Association of Neurological Surgeons; the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine; the American College of Preventive Medicine; the American Society of Addiction Medicine; the American Society of Anesthesiologists; Connecticut State Medical Society; The Endocrine Society; Iowa Medical Society; MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society; Medical Society of the District of Columbia; Medical Society of Virginia; Michigan State Medical Society; Mississippi State Medical Association; New Hampshire Medical Society; South Carolina Medical Association; State Medical Society of Wisconsin; and Vermont Medical Society.
