Notable Meeting: A Conference On Traditional And Alternative Cancer Therapies

The New Yorker Magazine calls it "The most important alternative medical meeting in America." According to William Fair, former Chair of Urologic Oncology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Medical Director, Health, Inc., it presents "knowledge...critical to clinical practice."

It is the 4th Annual Comprehensive Cancer Care Conference -- the nation's only conference exploring the use of alternative and traditional cancer therapies together. It will be held October 19-21 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Va.

The conference is expected to draw more than 1400 cancer patients, physicians, nurses, researchers, policymakers and alternative therapy practitioners. This year's conference will continue to bring together research in complementary and alternative therapies with oncologists to evaluate promising therapies and learn how doctors can integrate these new therapies into traditional treatment.

Sponsored by National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the conference presenters include Dean Ornish, MD, on ``Treating Prostrate Cancer'', Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, ``Recovering a Sense of Service'', James S. Gordon, MD, on The White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and scientific sessions on the Soy Controversy in Breast Cancer Treatment, The State of the Art with Hyperthermia and much more. The conference is supported by The American Cancer Society, Goldman Philanthropic Partnerships, The Kanbar Fund for Innovative Cancer Research and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The conference includes four tracks: patient, practice, research and healing.

Pre-conference workshops focus on techniques to integrate complementary and alternative therapies in oncology practices. The pre-conference is October 17-18.

The conference is presented by The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, a fourteen-year-old nonprofit education organization, founded by James S. Gordon, MD, Director. The center is devoted to creating effective models of integrative medicine and to making those models available and accessible to patients and healthcare professionals. The Center has trained over 600 health professionals and held conferences for over 3,000. Gordon is the Chair of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine and leads Healing the Wounds of War: International Program, training health professionals in war-torn Kosovo.
