Officials at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority are grappling with the timeline for the multi-million dollar renovation of the city’s convention center.

The $737 million renovation is slated to begin next year, but the end date is still in question. Initially, the plan was to complete the project in 2010, but at a February board meeting of the Las Vegas CVA, a proposal was made to extend the completion date out to 2012 based on input from customer focus groups.

The proposal was “neither approved or denied” by the board, says Jeremy Handel, LVCVA spokesman. “There has not been an official decision to delay the construction timeline.” Officials are looking at “all potential options,” including night work and weekend work, to mitigate the affect on shows and meetings, he says.

The decision on the timeline will be made in May or June when the final designs are submitted to the board, says Handel. The majority of the renovations will take place in back-of-house and public areas, including a new lobby connecting all three halls. Some additional meeting space will be added, but no increase in exhibit space is planned.
