Airports With Highest and Lowest Average Domestic Fares

Average domestic air fares in the second quarter of 2009 fell to their lowest April-to-June level since 1998, dropping 13 percent from the second quarter of 2008—the largest year-to-year decline on record, according to data released in October by the Department of Transportation. Nonetheless, airfares since the second quarter have been heading back up, as airlines recover from cutting capacity and as passenger traffic picks up.

Here's a look at the top 10 airports with the highest and lowest average domestic fares for the second quarter of 2009, according to the DOT's survey of 100 top U.S. airports. The good news is that many in the lowest average domestic airfare list are popular convention cities. Keep in mind that the average domestic fare for the second quarter of 2009 was $301.26.
