The Rimrock Resort Hotel, Banff, Alberta, has added a lobby bar, a wine-tasting room, and a full-service European-style spa featuring the latest in massage treatments. The hotel also invested $5 million in refurbishing its 345 guest rooms over the past three years.

Connected to the new wing of Calgary's Telus Convention Centre, the 355-room Hyatt Regency Calgary opened in May 2000. It has 20,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a 13,500-square-foot ballroom that can accommodate up to 1,300 people.

Chateau Eau Claire, a European-style boutique hotel with 29 luxury suites, opened this spring in Calgary.

The Calgary Marriott Hotel has completed a $7.9 million renovation that includes its guest rooms, meeting space, and fitness facility.

In Victoria, B.C., The Empress Hotel will open its Solace Spa this year, featuring 16 treatment rooms and mineral baths with waterfalls.

Downtown Vancouver expects to see a new Wyndham property open in 2004. The hotel will include 300 rooms and 16,000 square feet of meeting space.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the 385-room Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver is upgrading all meeting rooms and guest rooms with T1 Internet access.

Keeping pace, the Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver has installed high-speed Internet access in all 504 guest rooms and has added on-staff Cyber Butlers to help guests with their technology needs.

A new 254-room Four Seasons Resort Whistler, Canada, with a proposed opening in the second quarter of 2004, is being developed by Intrawest Corp. The property will be at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, with views of Blackcomb to the east and Whistler Mountain to the west.

In Nova Scotia, the Sheraton Halifax has added four breakout rooms and a boardroom.

Four Points by Sheraton Halifax is scheduled to open in September overlooking Halifax Harbor with 178 rooms and 1,500 square feet of meeting space.

Hotel Place d'Armes, a 48-room hotel in the heart of Old Montréal, opened this spring.

The Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Montréal, has introduced its Executive Level, with 44 deluxe guest rooms and suites and 3,500 square feet of flexible meeting space able to accommodate groups of 10 to 80 people.

Chateau Bonne Entente in Québec City has added 32 rooms, bringing the total room count to 155. The hotel has 25 meeting rooms.

The recently completed $10 million expansion at White Oaks Conference Resort & Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, includes a tower with 70 rooms and suites, for a total of 220. The conference center has 30,000 square feet of new meeting space, bringing the total to 70,000. The new 27-hole Royal Niagara Golf Course at White Oaks opened this spring.

The $800 million Casino Niagara project, which is scheduled for completion by 2003, will include a 368-room Hyatt Hotel, a casino, and 20,000 square feet of meeting and exhibition space; a 15,000-seat amphitheater is also under way.

Last May, Marriott International opened a 168-room Courtyard by Marriott one mile from Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Ritz-Carlton, Toronto is expected to break ground downtown early next year, for a 2004 opening. The property will have 221 hotel rooms.
Mid-Atlantic Moves

The 93-room Ritz-Carlton, Georgetown will open in the District of Columbia late this year. The $150 million project on K Street will have two meeting rooms with 1,225 square feet of meeting space.

The 32-story Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel opened in February with 750 guest rooms, 22 of which are suites and all of which are Marriott Rooms that Work. The hotel has more than 77,000 square feet of meeting and pre-function space, divisible into 37 meeting rooms, and two ballrooms. The hotel is on Pier Seven, with access to a 40-slip marina and a bridge walkway to the Baltimore Aquarium.

The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort in Cambridge, Md., on the banks of the Choptank River, will open in March. The $152 million project will include the 400-room hotel, 46,000 square feet of meeting space, an 18-hole golf course, and a 150-slip marina. Also planned is a 24,000-square-foot conference center and a 15,000-square-foot European spa.

The 242-room Richmond Marriott West hotel opened in June in Richmond, Va. Ten miles from the city's center and 16 miles from Richmond International Airport, the property is in located in the Innsbrook Office Park, with 7,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a 3,360-square-foot ballroom.

Hilton Hotels will open the 149-room Hilton Garden Inn Fairfax (Va.) in April. The four-story hotel will have a business center and 6,000 square feet of function space in six meeting rooms, including a 3,000-square-foot ballroom.

D.C. — based JBG Cos. has bought the 302-room Sheraton Reston (Va.) Hotel and will spend $11 million to renovate the 30-year-old property at Dulles Toll Road and Reston Parkway.

The 300-room Williamsburg (Va.) Woodlands Hotel, opened this summer, is a conference-oriented property that will include extensive meeting space.

The Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center renovation began in January when the East Wing, circa 1942, was demolished. The Tazewell and West Wing guest rooms remain open, as well as the original lobby, gift shop, and fitness center. Lodge renovation resumes in January 2003 with the addition of 150 guest rooms (for a total of 250) and a 30,000-square-foot conference center.
Pennsylvania Openings

Hyatt opened its second Philadelphia property in December. The Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn's Landing has 350 rooms and more than 24,000 square feet of meeting space. The waterfront property is near Independence Seaport Museum.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa in Farmington is renovating its lodge, town-houses, and two golf courses. The resort offers 275 guest rooms, suites, and town-houses and more than 23,000 square feet of meeting space.

In Pittsburgh's Cultural District, adjacent to the Byham Theater, the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel opened this spring in the 1906 Fulton Building. The 286-room, 14-suite hotel offers more than 10,000 square feet of meeting space. All the rooms are equipped with high-speed Internet access and wireless keyboards so that guests can go online via the television. Returning guests can opt for a personalized telephone number that will be assigned to them on every visit, regardless of changes in their room assignments.

The Westin Hotel Pittsburgh, next to the David Lawrence Convention Center, was rebranded in January. (It had been a Doubletree.) The owners have submitted a proposal to the city for a 500-room expansion of the 618-room hotel, to be part of the Liberty Center complex, to serve the expanded convention center. That proposal is competing with a bid from Hyatt Hotels, which wants to build a 750-room hotel for the convention center.
Fishing for an Incentive Destination?
Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, which manages such upscale properties as the Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas and Las Ventanas al Paradiso in Los Cabos, Mexico, has taken on its first Canadian property: King Pacific Lodge, a wilderness lodge on remote Princess Royal Island in northern British Columbia. Guests are delivered to the 17-suite lodge via float plane, where fly fishing, kayaking, and hiking are at the top of the agenda.

The View Isn't Changing
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, just north of Banff, Alberta, has two major additions in the works. A new meeting facility will add a central 700-person meeting hall, six meeting rooms, and 52 guest rooms by 2004, and a full-service spa is in the planning stages.
