Based on his experience with previous statutes, John Kusske, MD, professor emeritus and interim chair, neurological surgery, University of California Irvine School of Medicine, predicted, “If you surveyed 1,000 doctors, 990 wouldn’t know what Sunshine’s about. It’s not going to trickle down into university curricula or as a grand rounds topic.”
David Bazzo, MD, clinical professor of family medicine with the University of California San Diego, said that state medical associations might disseminate the information via the Web or a monthly magazine. He added that, since universities now educate residents about practice and business issues, this sort of information may well seep into the traditional curriculum. Enoch Choi, MD, partner, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, relies on his friends who attend events that cover legislative and regulatory topics and who are in close contact with pharma reps to keep him up-to-date on the latest regulations.
