Longtime CME leader David Lichtenauer passed away on January 19, 2009, at age 70 at his home in Indianapolis. Lichtenauer worked for the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. for 30 years, where he created the medical science liaison model that established a framework for scientific exchange between healthcare professionals and pharmaceutical companies.
After retiring in 1994, Lichtenauer served as a consultant on CME issues nationwide. Among his many accomplishments: He was a charter member of the National Task Force on CME Provider/Industry Collaboration, a fellow and past member of the board of directors of the Alliance for CME, a member emeritus of the Society for Academic CME, and a site surveyor and member of the Accreditation Council for CME's first external monitoring committee.
